神の思し召しとしか言いようのないタイミングが重なり満月だった。
And this day was also Inshallah, Mashallah.
It was a full moon with timing that can only be described as God’s will.
ということで夕食後、男数名でボートに乗り、ナイルのより人気のない小さな島？に向かうことになった。
So, after dinner, a few of us men boarded a boat and headed for a small, less popular island? on the Nile.
電灯も無く、いわゆるシティーライト、都市の灯りも全くない、川を満月の光だけで進む。
No electric lights, no so-called city lights, no city lights at all, just the light of the full moon on the river.
川に反射した月光も偶然納められている上記の写真でも見ての通り、真っ暗。
As you can see in the above photo, which also happens to show the moonlight reflecting off the river, it is pitch black.
月とその月光に照らされたものしか映らない世界。
A world in which only the moon and the objects illuminated by its moonlight are reflected.
現代社会の都市ではあまり体験できないが、沖縄の孤島などに行ったことがある人は体験したことがあるかもしれない。
It is not often experienced in the cities of modern society, but those who have been to isolated islands in Okinawa, for example, may have experienced it.
そんな状況は自分にはたまらないほど快感を感じる。
Such a situation feels irresistibly pleasurable to me.
自分の中に眠る野生が目覚める。
The wildness that lies dormant within you awakens.
決して暴力的な意味の獣性だけでなく、疑心暗鬼の無い獣ならではな純粋性というか理性を超える直感のみの世界。
It is a world of not only bestiality in the violent sense, but also a world of purity, or intuition that transcends reason, that is unique to beasts without doubt or suspicion.
夜は、闇は、当然『恐れ』も引き起こす。
ましてや巨大な川。
それが海だったら尚更だ。
Night, darkness, naturally causes ‘fear’ as well.
Especially if it is a huge river.
More so if it were an ocean.
一瞬でもその船が沈没したら？
そんな不安がよぎらないとしたら逆に想像力が足りないとしか言いようがない。
しかし、そんな『不安』よりも、目指す世界に対する『期待』を胸に抱き、恐怖や不安を心の中から消し去り、物事がうまく行くと信じる。
信じ切る。
What if that ship sinks, even for a moment?
If such anxieties don’t come to my mind, it can only be said that I don’t have enough imagination.
However, rather than such “anxiety,” we hold in our hearts the “expectation” of the world we are aiming for, erase the fear and anxiety from our minds, and believe that things will turn out all right.
We must believe in it.
程なく彼らが目的としていた地まで辿り着き、そこでおもむろに太鼓を叩き、歌い出す。

しかし２１世紀の恩恵で、こんな電気がない場所でノートPCのバッテリーだけで録音も可能なのだ。
先述したオーディオインターフェイスがバスパワー、つまり稼働電気をPCから引っ張れるので４０分くらいは充電のパワーだけで録音可能なのだ。
However, thanks to the blessings of the 21st century, it is possible to record in places like this where there is no electricity, using only the battery in the notebook PC.
The aforementioned audio interface is bus-powered, meaning that it can pull operating electricity from the PC, making it possible to record for 40 minutes on battery power alone.
先述したカイロで録音させてもらったダーゲル先生の演奏したヴァイオリンが入った下記の曲をリーダーのムハンマドさんにモニタリングしてもらい、その演奏に従って、他のメンバーも太鼓（ダラヴッカ・タブラ）やハンドクラップを叩く。
The leader, Muhammad, monitored the following piece with violin played by Dr. Dagel, which I had recorded in Cairo some time ago, and the other members followed his performance, beating drums (daravukka tabla) and handclaps.
そうして完成された曲がこのNight Sailだ。
The song thus completed is Night Sail.
この曲名はこの実際にこの体験をしたから付けたのではない。
こんな体験をするとは予想も想像もしないまま、現実化したのだ！
I did not name this song because of this actual experience.
I never expected or imagined that I would have this experience, but it became a reality!
奇跡というか、世にも奇妙な出来事としか言いようがない。
It is nothing short of a miracle or an out-of-this-world event.
ここまでプリミティヴ（原始的）な状況では、打ち込み音楽、電子音楽そのものに正直違和感を感じる。
『自然』であること以上に、正しく、美しく、力強いものはない。
Under such primitive circumstances, I honestly feel uncomfortable with typed music and electronic music itself.
There is nothing more correct, beautiful, and powerful than being “natural”.
そう思えるのだ。
It seems that way to me.
それでも彼らはどんどん録音しろと言う。
俺らの記憶を残してくれと言わんばかりに。
Still, they want us to record more and more.
They want us to remember them.
そしてこの曲も録音された。
And this song was also recorded.
NILEという曲だ。
The song is called NILE.
この曲も名前が先につけられ、後で具変化したというか、現実が表出した。
This song, too, was given a name first, and later the reality surfaced, or rather, changed.
このナイルでの体験は今でも記憶に深く残る。
This experience in the Nile remains deeply in my memory.
そして自分の人生に対する価値観に多大な影響を及ぼした。
And it had a tremendous impact on my values about my life.
途中で流石に充電の電気が切れ、自分も下手くそながら太鼓を叩いたりして、夜は明けていった。
Halfway through the night, the electricity from the batteries ran out, and I played the drums myself, poorly, and the night went on.
その夜は幻想だったのか。
Was that night an illusion?
いや、この写真や音声がその証拠だ。
No, these photos and audio are proof of that.
この世は幻想のように過ぎ去っていくが、また朝日とともに現実は訪れる。
This world passes away like an illusion, but reality comes again with the morning sun.
少し仮眠でも取ろうと船で宿というか、誰かの家まで行く。
シーシャなど燻らしながら現実的な存在である身体を休め、眠ることで、意識を夢に引き渡し、そしてまた体力、気力を取り戻し、現実を生きる。
I take a boat to an inn, or rather someone’s house, to take a short nap.

少しだけ寝て、起きて昼過ぎ、自分が近年関わるアイヌ民族の音楽をアップデートさせるアーティストOKIさんの音源を彼らに聞かせてみる。
先述したようにアイヌの二風谷ダム含め、ヌビアとの共通項は多い。
いわゆるネイティヴピープル同士、感じるものがあったようで喜んでいた。

ムハンマドさんとは今回初めて会ったわけだが、昔ドバイやら何ヵ国かで出稼ぎ労働者として働いていた経験から英語も喋れ、とても話しやすく、この村とは違う、ある意味狂った現代社会も知ってるわけで、そこを経由しながらも、いったい何が人生にとって重要かを深く理解している人だ。
I met Muhammad for the first time this time. He speaks English and is very easy to talk to, having worked as a migrant laborer in Dubai and several other countries in the past, and he knows a certain crazy modern society that is different from this village.
And he is a person who deeply understands what is important in life while going through it.
歳は自分と5歳も変わらないが、すごく大人な人で、若い時は酒も含め、色々やったが、今は敬虔なムスリムとしてしっかりと真っ当な道を歩んでいる。
very mature person, and although he did many things when he was young, including drinking, he is now a devout Muslim who is firmly on the proper life.
人生をどう生きるべきかは学校では教えてくれない。
Schools don’t teach you how you should live your life.
自分の経験的には身近な親や、地元の先輩よりも、遠く離れた人種、民族、文化が違うところに住む人たちに教えられることが多い。
In my own experience, I have more to learn from people who live far away from me, in places of different race, ethnicity, and culture, than from my immediate parents or my local seniors.
今回のムハンマドさんも人生に対する方向性を示してくれた重要な先輩となった。
This time, Mr. Muhammad also became an important senior who gave us direction for our lives.
ここでは書けないような色々なことも話した。
We talked about many things that I can’t write about here.
とにかくたった1日だけどまさに特別な体験だった。
Anyway, it was just one day, but it was truly a special experience.
感慨に耽る街までの船の上、サラートさんが歌う歌に涙した。

東京出身。15歳からバンドとＤＪの活動を並行して始め、スケートボードを通して知り合ったメンバーで結成されたバンドEvilPowersMeの音源は、結成後すぐにアメリカのイラストレイターPusheadのレーベル等からリリースされる。DJとしてもその革新的でオリジナルなスタイルが一世を風靡し、瞬く間に国内外の巨大なフェスからアンダーグランドなパーティまで活動が展開される。 ソロの楽曲制作としても米Grand RoyalからのBuffalo Daughterのリミックスを皮切りに、Boredoms等のリミックス等メジャー、インディー問わず様々なレーベルからリリースされる。2003年にキューバで現地ミュージシャンとレコーディングツアーを敢行したのを皮切りに、その後世界各地で録音を重ね、新たなWorld Musicの指針として、立ち上げたレーベルCROSSPOINTを始動。

Born in Tokyo, he started playing in bands and DJing at the same time when he was 15. As a DJ, his innovative and original style and his activities have quickly expanded from huge festivals to underground parties both in Japan and abroad. In 2003, he went on a recording tour with local musicians in Cuba, and since then he has been recording all over the world, and started his own label, Crosspoint, as a new guideline for New World Music.
In music production, he has also produced video works, picture books and art books, and organized the outdoor festival “Jomon and Rebirth” in 2012.
9 consecutive months of vinyl releases in 2015 became a big topic, and his fourth album was released at the end of that year, which led to the worldwide release of his new album on the Berlin/Israeli label Malka Tuti.
HIGHTIME Inc. with DJ TASAKA in 2017, and ZEN RYDAZ, a unit with MACKA-CHIN of Nitro Microphone Underground and MaL of PART2STYLE, in 2018.
In the same year, his music under the name of J.A.K.A.M. was released in analog form on the French label HardFist, which led to a live performance at the huge 30,000-person Nuits Sonores Festival in Lyon, followed by a DJ tour of Europe and Israel.
In 2019, the production of MYSTICS, a unit with Marcus Henriksson and Kuniyuki of Minilogue/Son Kite, which has a worldwide following, will begin, and the long-awaited album will be released in 2021.
His original vision is spreading across all genres and around the world.
